 | 06:23 am - abdominal swelling So...I've had this issue for about 2 months now. I initially had a low-grade fever and body aches (sort of flu like) with abominal pain and swelling mostly around my belly button toward the right side around 2 months ago. I finally ended up at the ER where all the tests were pretty much inconclusive. They did blood, urine, pelvic, and CT scan. There was a minor amount of bacteria in my urine so they pretty much gave me cipro and pain meds and sent me on my way. I followed up with my pcp and she had me get an ultrasound on my ovaries and didn't come up with anything. Two months later I still have swelling and some pain in that same area around my belly button. It was on and off but now is not going away. I probably should go back to the doctor again but I feel like it's useless. I paid so much for all the tests and doctor visits already and nothing was found so I'm assuming its nothing serious. Sorry....this is probably more of a rant than anything. I'm just aggravated and not sure what to do from here and debating whether its worth going through another round of tests. I had a checkup at my urologist office yesterday and my urine at least was ok so no infections there. Any thoughts from anyone who has been through this would be great. Current Mood: aggravated

 | 04:25 am - Student Loans Hi, I am an upcoming freshmen and I have been stressing out about and putting off doing all the research for student loans and it's getting close to that time where I need to have had it done and over with. Could anyone give me some advice as to where to start? Are there certain student loans that are widely accepted as "the best"? Thanks in advance for any information you can give me. -Adri

 | 05:15 pm Does anyone have experience with Pell Grants? I have just received one to go to university this fall and it would pay for almost all my tuition. However, I was chosen for verification and the process is a bit scary to me. My FAFSA EFC is still 0 but I had a $1000 gift from a non-parent last year. Will having that untaxed income drastically reduce or eliminate the grant's amount?
I really appreciate your time, thank you! Current Mood: anxious

 | 08:09 pm - Laundry Detergent Just wondering:
What do you guys recommend as a cheap, but good laundry detergent? Specifically something that won't (or is less likely to) cause fading ... I've been using Sun, and I'm not impressed.
Disclaimer: I know that some of you make detergent yourself, but I'm looking for something store-bought, because at this point, I have slightly more money than time... though never enough of either!

 | 10:16 pm - Eau de Mouse Last night I came home to the smell of mouse in my room. I had a mouse problem in my bedroom years ago, but haven't seen sign of a mouse in there since. We occasionally get mice, but the landlord is pretty good about steel wooling up the holes, etc., so we've actually been pretty good lately. But the smell of mouse is driving me crazy! It's in the same area that I had the mouse trouble years ago, but despite using a flashlight to look under my bed, check behind my nightstand (not as thoroughly as possible, but I had to go to work), and with no sign of mouse-poop anywhere I'm at a total loss.
So where does the poor skill come in? Is this a sign that I've got a mouse making a home somewhere in my bedroom? Admittedly I'm a messy person. There's no food about, but there are plenty of things. Or is it that a mouse from, say, my neighbor's apt has died in the walls/floor and now I'm having to deal with the smell until he, gulp, decomposes? Would a natural mouse repellent work if I do have a pest? I'm a bit at a loss and thoroughly frustrated. And grossed out to boot. (I realize there's a major room-cleaning-up project in my future, but feel free to remind me as a community kick in the pants. Clearly I need one.)

 | 12:07 pm - Yet Another Moronic Comment I Found Long-term residents of this community know that, from time to time, I post stuff I find on other Livejournal communities here in order for you to smell the freshest e-manure available, both because I find it to be utterly ridiculous, but also because, well...I'm not the sharpest rhetorician in the shed. I'm thinking of starting a series based around this, maybe calling it "Dorkwatch" or "Duhwatch" or something. I don't know, I'll let you come up with it.
So somebody on talk_politics, a community I mod (sort of; being a libertarian I don't do much) posted an entry arguing that everyone has a "right to food." Now, while that's pretty ridiculous in and of itself, that's not actually what I want to focus on. (Feel free to start up tangent threads about it, though.) Somewhere, the conversation swept over to simply government-based institutions vs. private ones, and someone suggested that private police and fire departments might be better.
The response was this.
Even though I wrote a response, I think I was a bit hasty, because even now I'm not even sure where to begin. What sort of view of humanity must one have to think that, simply because a police force or fire department is private--maybe even for-profit--that they won't come out and help you if you're in the middle of an emergency? That seems pretty frickin` negative.
I mean, really, what goes on in these people's heads? Sure, the behavior of top-level corporate CEO's is dispicable, but to think that anybody who works with a private institution would do that is just...childish. In fact, I find a lot of criticisms nowadays towards the free-market and libertarian thought are childish. Like the one guy who said that if GM failed Detroit would become a ghost town and the world would end.
Yeah okay.
What would you say in response? What would you say in response to my response? C'mon, be honest--it wasn't the best, and we need sharp, critical rhetorical analyses from our {allies, compatriots, comrades?}

 | 09:00 pm - help? For a few weeks I've been peeing a lot more than normal and a few days ago I noticed my urine smells weird, kind of onion-y. And no, I haven't been eating onions, heh. I'm not sure what this is, but does it sound like something that needs to be checked out ASAP? I have a doctor's appointment on July 27th.
Thanks! Current Mood: confused

 | 08:21 pm - Social Work on the East Coast Hello everyone, I have a few questions. First off, I will be a senior in high school next year, and plan to pursue Social Work as a major in college. However, I am having a lot of trouble finding a school that fits my needs (which aren't much). I would like to attend a school that is in/near a decently sized city that offers Social Work, room and board, and will not cost me an arm and a leg. I currently live 30 minutes outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the few schools near here that offer Social Work cost far too much money (most of the schools that offer the major tend to be private). Also, I would prefer to get away from here (preferably closer to NYC, but that's likely asking too much, I'm afraid). This leads me to my first question... is it true that you get more aid when you attend a private school, and that it in turn makes the crazy tuition costs they have less crazy? Also, can anyone offer me information/personal experiences regarding schools that seem to fit my description above?
Also, I'm not sure if it is phrased this way on the FAFSA or not, but when things say "total household income" does it literally mean the total of those living within your home? I ask this because my father just moved out, and basically no money is brought into the home if he is not counted.
Oh and lastly, this past year I began attending high school online. I am wondering if there are any other people here who graduated from an online school, and what your experiences with it have been like later on (specifically with college admittance).
Thank you for any possible help!

 | 07:34 pm - HBC and sex drive I already asked this in the vaginapagina community but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask here too since I didn't get as much info as I'd hoped:
Does anyone know if there is any reputable evidence of the birth control pill (or any other HBC, I guess) permanently reducing one's sex drive?
**edit**...I should have said "permanently reduce one's sex drive, even AFTER getting off of the pill."
Thanks ladies!
